Honoring a Legacy in Medicine, And Empowering You at the Center of Care:
My Journey in Medicine
Taking that first step into a neurosurgeon's office can feel deeply overwhelming. When you face a complex neurological condition, you carry a heavy burden of worry for your health, your family, and your future. I understand this weight. For more than three decades, I have sat across from patients experiencing the exact same fears and uncertainties you might be feeling right now.
I started this blog as a space to connect with you on a more personal level. I want to pull back the curtain on neurosurgery, demystify the procedures we perform, and share the values that guide my practice.
Through this platform, you will learn about my background, the philosophy that drives my approach to patient care, and the deep-seated passion I hold for patient care. Most importantly, I want you to know the person behind the surgical mask. You deserve a surgeon who combines high technical skill with genuine empathy, and I want to share exactly how I built my practice around that standard.
A Legacy of Medicine at the Dinner Table
Medicine is not just a profession for me; it is practically woven into my DNA. I grew up in a household where medicine was a core part of everyday life. My father served his community as a thoracic surgeon, and my mother worked meticulously as a radiologist. Our family dinner table was often filled with stories of patient care, medical breakthroughs, and the profound responsibility that comes with holding another person's well-being in your hands.
Watching my parents dedicate their lives to others left an indelible mark on me. I saw the long hours, the emotional investment, and the quiet satisfaction they felt when they helped someone recover. They taught me that medicine is a calling, not merely a job. They modeled a level of compassion and dedication that I strive to bring to my own practice every single day.
I proudly carry this legacy forward, and it brings me immense joy to see it continue into the next generation. Two of my four children are currently pursuing their own paths in medicine. Watching them dedicate themselves to making a life-saving impact in their communities fills me with an indescribable pride. The desire to help others heal truly runs deep in our family.
The Brain: The Ultimate Control Center
When I entered medical school at Queens University and later pursued residency training at the University of Toronto, I encountered every medical specialty. Yet, I found myself captivated by the nervous system. The brain is the ultimate control center of the human body. It dictates our movements, houses our memories, shapes our personalities, and makes us who we are.
Working with the brain and the spine requires a level of reverence. You are not just operating on tissue and bone; you are working directly with the essence of a person. This profound realization drew me specifically to stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. I wanted to understand the most complex structure in the known universe and use that understanding to restore function to those who had lost it.
Every day in the operating room feels like a privilege. Over the past 30+ years, I have seen remarkable advancements in our understanding of neurological function. We can now pinpoint microscopic misfires in the brain and correct them. This ongoing fascination with the nervous system fuels my commitment to lifelong learning and keeps me passionate about my work, even after three decades in the field.
The Beauty of a "Clean" and Precise Surgery
People often ask me why I chose the surgical route over a purely clinical path. The answer lies in the incredible precision and impact of neurosurgical procedures. Neurosurgery is exceptionally meticulous. It is a "clean" surgery, relying heavily on advanced imaging, exact calculations, and a steady hand.
I specialize in minimally invasive surgical options and innovative surgical navigation. Whether I am performing Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's disease or utilizing Gamma Knife technology for complex brain tumors, the goal remains the same. We want to achieve maximum benefit with the smallest possible footprint. The technological advancements I have witnessed and adopted throughout my career allow us to treat conditions today that were considered untreatable when I first began.
The true beauty of this precision is the life-changing difference it makes for my patients. There is nothing quite like the experience of turning on a DBS device and watching a patient's severe tremor settle. Witnessing someone regain their independence, hold a cup of coffee without spilling, or walk without pain is the greatest reward I could ever ask for. That tangible improvement in a patient's quality of life is why I love this specialty so deeply.
Why I Founded Neurosurgery Answer
Throughout my career, I have held respected faculty appointments at Duke University Medical Center and the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. I loved helping shape the next generation of medical professionals. However, I always felt a strong pull to create a clinical community environment completely dedicated to specialized, patient-centered care.
I founded Neurosurgery Answer with the support of Northside Hospital to bring that vision to life. I wanted a practice where patients felt heard, respected, and deeply cared for from the moment they walked through the door. I intentionally built an environment that strips away the cold, clinical feel often associated with specialized medicine.
At Neurosurgery Answer, we treat the patient, not just the MRI scan. We take the time to understand your unique lifestyle, your goals, and your fears. Your brain and spine require the utmost precision, but your mind and spirit require warmth and empathy. My goal is to merge these two necessities seamlessly.
A Collaborative Approach to Your Care
I firmly believe that the best medical outcomes arise from collaboration. This applies not only to my work alongside other medical teams, but also to my partnership with you. You are the most important member of your healthcare team.
When you sit in my office, we will review your imaging together. I will explain your condition in plain language, and try to break it down so it is easily understood, free of unnecessary medical jargon. We will discuss all available options, weighing the benefits of advanced surgery against conservative management. My role is to empower you with knowledge so we can make the best possible decision for your specific path forward.
Patients frequently travel great distances to seek counsel at our clinic. I do not take that trust lightly. Every person who entrusts me with their care receives my fierce commitment to restoring their optimal health and quality of life.
Moving Forward Together
Navigating a neurological or spinal issue is undoubtedly daunting. But you do not have to walk this path alone. Through this blog, I will continue to share insights, highlight innovative treatments, and offer practical guidance to help you better understand your neurological health.
